Features of Akayu Onsen
Akayu Onsen is located within a town, something that is rare among hot spring resorts in Yamagata Prefecture, and can be reached after getting off the Shinkansen. The area is known for its grapes. In addition to grape picking at the tourist orchards, the area is also known for its wine made from locally-grown grapes. Many of the wineries in Yamagata Prefecture are located in the Akayu area, and it is fun to walk around the town and try out the wines. The hot spring inns, footbaths, public baths, and wineries are all within walking or biking distance. Nanyo City, where Akayu Onsen is located, is home to beautiful seasonal flowers such as cherry blossoms, peonies, roses, and chrysanthemums. In particular, the 1,000 cherry trees in Akayu and Eboshiyama Park have been selected as one of the 100 most popular cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan. Akayu Onsen is 2 and a half hours from Tokyo Station by Yamagata Shinkansen. From Akayu Station, it takes about 5 minutes by hotel shuttle bus.
