Features of Asahikawa・Sounkyo Area

Sounkyo Onsen is a major hot spring resort situated in an area that boats some of the most beautiful gorges in Hokkaido. Nearly 20 hotels and inns can be found along the Sounkyo gorge at the foot of Mt. Kurodake in Daisetsuzan National Park. Sounkyo, known as one of the most scenic spots in Hokkaido, is a gorge that stretches about 24 km along the upper reaches of the Ishikari River. The natural scenery is impressive here, with cliffs more than 600 meters high, magnificent columnar joints, and famous waterfalls such as Ginganotaki (Ginga Waterfall) and Ryuseinotaki (Meteor Waterfall). The river is named after the Ainu word "Souunbetsu (river with many waterfalls). The seasons bring some especially breathtaking views: In autumn, the surfaces of the rocky walls are covered in red leaves, and, in winter, waterfalls freeze into large icicles. It takes about 40 minutes by bus from Asahikawa Airport to Asahikawa Station, and then another 90 minutes by bus to Sounkyo Onsen.
