Features of Kirishima Area
The Kirishima area consists of four hot spring villages in Kagoshima Prefecture: Kirishima Onsen Village, Kirishima Jingu Onsen Village, Myoken Anraku Onsen Village, and Hinatayama Onsen Village. The area is said to be the place where Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the god of Japanese mythology, descended from the heavens. There are ten kinds of hot springs and inns scattered around the area, each with different water qualities and atmosphere. Legendary samurai Takamori Saigo often visited this hot spring area at the end of the Edo period (1603-1867) and during the Meiji period (1868-1912), and it is also famous as the first hot spring area in Japan where national hero Ryoma Sakamoto came on his honeymoon. The area is about 30 minutes from Kagoshima Airport and 30 to 50 minutes from Kagoshima Chuo Station by Shinkansen.
