The Matsumoto region is home to Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture in the central region of Japan. It is a city of historical streets at the foot of the Northern Alps, and Matsumoto Castle, the oldest extant five structure/six story castle in Japan. It used to be a castle town that flourished in the Edo period, and even today, you can enjoy historical sights such as Nawate Street, which still has an old-fashioned atmosphere. From Tokyo, you can take the JR Limited Express Super Azusa or Azusa from Tokyo Station to Nagano Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, and then transfer to the Limited Express Shinano.The Limited Express Shinano also runs from the Osaka and Nagoya regions. Express buses also run from Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya to Matsumoto.
