Features of Sasebo・Iki・Hirado Area
With popular theme park Huis Ten Bosch and a U.S. military base nearby, Sasebo, may have somewhat more of a western feel. The area is home to more than 170 islands which offer many exciting things to see. The Kujuku Islands is where the sunsets are particularly beautiful, and the Saikai Bridge is a good spot to catch whirpools. Hirado Island, located at the westernmost tip of Nagasaki Prefecture, is home to Hirado City, a former castle town with an exotic atmosphere and many World Heritage sites related to the plight of the "Hidden Christians." Besides its historical side, this port town is a great place for fresh seafood, and Nanban sweets, introduced to Japan through trading here. The hot springs that are found in this area have a thick consistency and is known as a “Hot Spring of Beauty.” The hot spring on Iki Island is said to be an ancient hot spring that has been around for 1,700 years. Other great hot springs can be found along Yunomoto Bay, where the baths offer sunset views, and is a popular spot to enjoy seafood and marine sports unique to the island. It takes about two hours by bus from Fukuoka/Hakata to Sasebo.
