Features of Unzen Onsen・Obama・Shimabara Area
Unzen Onsen is a 350-year old onsen resort located 700 meters above sea level and is known for its milky-white sulfur spring. It was the first hot spring resort in Japan to be designated as a national park. It is also known as a place where the Christian martyrdom took place. The remenants of this sad history and its tragic stories can still be seen today. After taking a hot bath, it is recommended to try the the famous "onsen tamago" (hot spring egg) and "guzoni" (a local dish invented by Shiro Amakusa during the Shimabara Rebellion). Obama Onsen has 30 inns and hotels dotted along the coastline. Delicious seafood dishes can be enjoyed here. It takes about 90 minutes by train from Hakata Station in Fukuoka, and another 80 minutes by bus from JR Isahaya Station. There is also a bus which takes around 2 hours from Nagasaki Airport.
