Sakurajima - the symbol of Kagoshima Prefecture - remains, to this day, an active volacano that still experiences periodic small-scale eruptions. Other volcanoes that can be found in the region include Mt. Kirishima and Kuchinoerabu-jima. It is because of these volcanoes that has helped make Kagoshima Prefecture become the hot spring region it is. There is much to try for the hot spring fanatic from the Ibusuki hot steam sand baths, to the unique foot baths of Izumi. The island of Yakushima, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also a part of Kagoshima Prefecture.
