Sitting on a very abundant hot spring area, Oita Prefecture professes itself to be the 'Onsen Prefecture' of Japan. It is at the hell-like landscape of Beppu where you can try food not only cooked in the hot spring water, but also "Jigoku-mushi" (Hell steam cuisine), where the steam gives a hand in the cooking process. Enjoy a walk down the street of Yunotsubo Road in Yufuiin, lined with many high-end Japanese inns, restaurants and gift shops. Besides these places, there are also a wealth of small individual onsens within Oita Prefecture. Nagayu Onsen has one of the world's best naturally carbonated hot springs; a place to soak yourself in water that foams in a way much like soda.
