Founded in 1910, Kyogen has been designing family crests for a wide variety of objects and things regardless of genre, combining traditional Japanese design with a modern sensibility. We invite you to visit our workshop, the source of our creativity, and experience family crest design.
Experience for yourself how family crests are created.
You will have a simple production experience that can be enjoyed by both children and adults.
Observe up close the craftsmanship that goes into making a family crest!
You will be able to see up close how they are painted on the cloth in a meticulous process. Hear from the master himself about the process of creating an original family crest. *Original family crests are available at an additional cost.
Schedule
Meet up: Ueno Station Park Exit or at your accommodation in Tokyo.
Please present your My Page reservation screen at the meeting location. A chinese-speaking staff member from Pocket Culture will guide you through the tour. *If you wish to be picked up at your accommodation, we can arrange a taxi for you.
Lunch: Inshotei (Ueno)
Walk to the lunch place. Lunch (Japanese cuisine) will be served.
Workshop tour & family crest design activity: Kyogen workshop (Ueno)
You will be guided on foot to a workshop which is closed to the public. You will have the opportunity to go through the whole process while we translate during the activity.
If you wish to have your original family crest produced, this section explains the process and costs involved moving forward.

Kyogen has established itself as a new art form by fusing today's technology with traditional Japanese techniques that have remained unchanged since the ancient Heian period (794-1192).
You will have a special opportunity to experience family crest design in a workshop that is the source of Kyogen's creativity.
You will hear about the role of family crests for Japanese people, the process of making them, how to use tools, and what 0.08mm is intended to do.
Experience the depth of the art through the activity of actually writing the family crest.
After using the tools yourself, you will be able to see the craftsmanship right in front of you. Please enjoy the beauty of family crest in front of your eyes while appreciating the reasons for being a master craftsman.
Finally, we can also accommodate those who wish to create their own original family crest. We will deliver the data based on e-mail communication.

- Chinese-speaking staff are not certified as National or Regional Interpreter Guide.
- Up to 1 child under 8 years old may accompany you. Please let us know at the time of reservation if you wish to bring your child.
- The base fee of JPY 110,000 includes lunch for one person only; for more than two people, please apply for the number of people in your group as an option.
- Lunch will be served at Ueno Inshotei (Japanese restaurant), but if you have other preferences, please let us know when you make your reservation. *We can arrange for another place within Ueno area at the same cost as at Inshotei.
- If you wish to have an original family crest made, please let us know at the time of booking. *Email communication with the business will occur before and after your arrival in Japan. A separate fee of approximately JPY 1,000,000 will be charged.
