Activity

The venue is Kamakura, which is rich in history and nature. The place is popular among foreigners and it takes about an hour by train from Tokyo.

The venue is a Zen temple with a history of about 650 years

Explanation on zazen and Enso by the chief priest.

Draw Ensō on a handmade paper certified as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. You can take the calligraphy with the Ensō drawn on it as a lucky charm.

Enjoy the experience, the pure Japanese architecture, and the beautiful garden at the Zen temple.

A Zen temple in the precincts of Engakuji is used for private use.

Schedule

  • You will be explained about Zen experience with documents.

Please present the My Page reservation screen at the reception.

  • Draw Ensō of Zen art with a brush (before)

Ensō is a circular symbolic representation of enlightenment, truth, Buddha-nature, and the entire universe. First of all, feel free to draw a circle with a brush.

  • Zazen will be teached by the chief priest.

The chief priest teaches zazen (座禅: zazen), and Zen meditation (坐禅: zazen) three times. The reason for the three times is that the foundation of zazen consists of three parts.

  • Talk about Ensō and draw the Ensō of zazen art on Sekishu-Banshi paper which is one of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage(after)

After the second zazen, you will hear a Zen picturesque story. This picturesque story is an important philosophy that all Zen monks must learn. You can find a secret of Ensō in this story. After learning the meaning of Ensō and preparing your mind with zazen, draw Ensō again. The second time you will draw on a special paper, Sekishu-Banshi paper. Sekishu-Banshi paper has been selected as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and is made by a manufacturing method that has continued for more than a thousand years.

  • Break and share experience impressions
