The most recent eruption occurred in th eyear 2000, and it is still an active volcano, spewing smoke from its lava dome.

From the observation deck, you can see Mt. Yotei and the Pacific Ocean. If the weather is good, you can also see the Oshima Peninsula that connects to Hakodate.

This is a moderate-level hiking trail that allows those who are not used to climbing to walk at their own pace.

Mt. Usu trailhead
A free shuttle will take you to the Mt. Usu trailhead. (approx. 60 minutes)
View point from the outer rim of the crater
Climb the mountain path in the forest and aim for the Usu Gairizan Observation Deck. (approx. 90 minutes)
Break
Enjoy lunch and a restroom break while admiring the beautiful scenery. (approx. 30 minutes)
Descending the mountain, to the parking lot and adex base
Walk down the mountain and head to the parking lot. (approx. 45-60 minutes) Return to adex base by free shuttle. (approx. 60 minutes)

・This hike requires a moderate level of physical fitness. The course is about 7 kilometers long and takes about 3 hours to climb up and down the rough terrain.
・There will be a lunch break at the summit, and there are restrooms available for use.

・Appropriate footwear such as walking boots and breathable clothing suitable for exercise are required.
・Please bring a lightweight raincoat in case it rains.
・During the summer, we recommend bringing sunglasses and sunscreen.
