Activity

Cooking handmade udon noodles the old way

We will make udon noodle from scratch in the same way as Japanese people do at home. First, we will knead the udon dough with your weight and roll it out to a uniform thickness with a rolling pin many times. By doing so, you can make chewy udon noodles.

Use the vegetables you've harvested for lunch

Participants will gather vegetables in a short amount of time and experience a traditional Japanese rural lifestyle in an environment that keeps the original Japanese rural scenery. You will be able to experience some Japanese rural life on the fields, something you cannot get in the city!

A lunch to appreciate the seasonal changes retained in farming villages.

Participants will cook their own udon noodles and serve them with tempura made with locally harvested vegetables, creating a lunch that reflects a Japanese farming village. When you share the udon among those that participated together, you notice each person's uniqueness in the finished product.

Understand the rural life in Japan

Take a walk through the rural surroundings of Maruen, which is about 25 kilometers from the city center, and admire the Japanese way of thinking and lifestyle that has been passed down through generations.

I had a profound experience of Japanese culture and felt the strong emphasis that the Japanese people place on their country’s historical intangible cultural heritage.
