Activity

Experience walking around the temple grounds with an English-speaking guide at Rengein Tanjoji Temple.

We will guide you around Rengein Tanjoji Okunoin Temple, one of Kyushu's leading "power spots" (place thought to bring good energy), which has spacious temple grounds at the west foot of the city's sacred mountain, Mt. Shodai. Please enjoy the temple grounds across all four seasons.

The world's largest temple bell, the Bell of Hiryu.

The Bell of Hiryu is based on the Buddhist teachings of bakku-yoraku (saving people from the sufferings of this world and giving them compassion) and rigoutokudatsu (relieving oneself from the karma of this world and attaining liberation). Its size and weight are determined in hopes of "fulfilling one's wishes." The temple bell represents the seated Buddha, and the sound is said to represent the Buddha's sermons.

Japan's first climbable five-storied pagoda.

It is the largest in size and the third tallest in Japan, and the main hall is one entire layer of the five-story pagoda. Each floor is a training hall, and Nadebotoke-san, a symbol of luck in marriage, is enshrined on the fifth floor. From the top, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the Ariake Sea and Mt. Unzen Fugen-dake.
