Activity

Embark on a journey to uncover stories forged over a thousand years of ironmaking

Yasugi and Oku-Izumo are deeply connected to the tradition of Tatara iron-making. This tour invites you to explore heritage sites linked to the story and cultural assets of the Japan Heritage "Izumo no Kuni Fudoki"—a collection of oral narratives compiled in the early 8th century as a report to the imperial court—while engaging with current practitioners and finding inspiration for your own future.

Visit the special limited exhibition of the "Tamahagane Engi"—a cultural property of Yasugi City!

See the 55-meter-long "Tamahagane Engi" picture scroll, a Japan Heritage piece that illustrates the 1,400-year story of Tatara iron-making—on display for a limited time only.

Interact with local blacksmiths

Step into the shoes of an apprentice under master swordsmith Hironari Koto at Kajikobo Hiromitsu. Unlike standard iron-making workshops or tours, this hands-on program lets you work with the same forges and tools used by real craftsmen. As you learn about the passion and challenges of swordsmiths preserving centuries-old traditions in a modern world, you’ll also find space to reflect on your own journey—past, present, and future.

Enjoy the interactive story tour

This interactive tour offers more than just a history lesson—it's a journey into the past, present, and future of Tatara iron-making. As a sustainable craft rooted in harmony between people and nature, Tatara is also rich with myths waiting to be uncovered. You'll visit Kanayago Shrine, dedicated to the god of iron-making, where the current chief priest will offer a prayer and share local legends and history. The adventure continues at Sugaya Ironworks Village, where you'll experience traditional iron-making techniques, meet a Yamago (a mountain worker), and immerse yourself in the world of Tatara iron-making through all five senses.
