Activity

Embark on a journey to uncover stories forged over a thousand years of ironmaking

Yasugi and Oku-Izumo are deeply connected to the tradition of Tatara iron-making. This tour invites you to explore heritage sites linked to the story and cultural assets of the Japan Heritage "Izumo no Kuni Fudoki"—a collection of oral narratives compiled in the early 8th century as a report to the imperial court—while engaging with current practitioners and finding inspiration for your own future.

Visit the special limited exhibition of the "Tamahagane Engi"—a cultural property of Yasugi City!

See the 55-meter-long "Tamahagane Engi" picture scroll, a Japan Heritage piece that illustrates the 1,400-year story of Tatara iron-making—on display for a limited time only.

Interact with local blacksmiths

Step into the shoes of an apprentice under master swordsmith Hironari Koto, whose blacksmith workshop, Kajikobo Hiromitsu, has been in business since the Edo period (1603-1868.) Unlike standard iron-making workshops or tours, this hands-on program lets you work with the same forges and tools used by real craftsmen. As you learn about the passion and challenges of swordsmiths preserving centuries-old traditions in a modern world, you’ll also find space to reflect on your own journey—past, present, and future.

Prayer experience at Kanayago Shrine—a sacred site for ironworkers

In addition to becoming an apprentice to a swordsmith at Kajikobo Hiromitsu, you’ll also take part in a prayer experience at Kanayago Shrine, a sacred site revered by those in the ironworking world. This rare opportunity offers a deep connection to the local culture and spiritual traditions. In this special place where history and craftsmanship meet, you’ll find space for quiet reflection—bridging the past, present, and future through a personal journey of discovery.

Enjoy a relaxing time at Saginoyusou—a premium ryokan just a short walk from Adachi Museum of Art

The Adachi Museum of Art has consistently ranked first in the Japanese garden rankings by the US-based "Journal of Japanese Gardening." Just a minute’s walk away is Saginoyusou, a long-established ryokan that first opened in 1909. Unwind in this premium retreat with natural hot spring baths, refined cuisine, traditional Japanese architecture, and serene gardens.
