Take the train to Higashi-Beppu Station
Take a train with your guide from Beppu Station to the next station, Higashi-Beppu Station. It takes about 3 minutes.
Start of the walking tour!
After receiving instructions, the walking tour will begin along the pilgrimage route.
Return to Higashi-Beppu Station to finish the tour.

Notes
This walking tour takes you along part of the 1,280-year-old Kyushu Saigoku Pilgrimage Route. It will be guided by a local expert who knows Beppu inside and out.
The five-kilometer route, with a 200-meter elevation difference, takes about three hours to complete on foot.
During the tour, you'll gain deeper insights into (1) Buddhism and (2) Japanese life.
(1) Regarding Buddhism, while offering prayers to the stone Buddhas along the pilgrimage route, you can hear stories about the characteristics of Buddhism as it spread from China to Korea and then to Japan.
Along the way, you'll also gain insight into the route's origins and the significance of the 270 stone Buddhas you encounter.
(2) Regarding Japanese life, you can learn about the blessings of the sea and mountains surrounding the pilgrimage route. The sea, which connects to the Shikoku Pilgrimage Route on the opposite shore, is not only a spectacular view but also nurtures abundant resources. Feel nature as you hear about the plants and monkeys inhabiting the surrounding mountains.
By walking along local roads and villages, which you cannot experience in city sightseeing, you will be able to feel a more authentic side of Japan.
