Forge your own paper knife in a historic iron-making town

Experience authentic craftsmanship in Okuizumo, the only place in Japan that still practices Tatara iron-making as of 2025. Create a unique, high-quality paper knife that blends tradition with everyday utility.

The sustainable water management and agroforestry system of the Okuizumo region, the only place in Japan to revive Tatara ironmaking, has been selected as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. This includes the town of Okuizumo, where iron production is deeply intertwined with the local ecosystem.

Discover the sustainable legacy of Tatara iron-making

Learn how Okuizumo’s ancient iron-making techniques shaped its stunning landscape. The tradition of kanna-nagashi (sand iron collection) created the region’s iconic terraced rice fields and ponds—a harmony between industry and nature.

Master ancient Japanese blacksmithing techniques alongside blacksmithing artisans known as "Kaji"

Feel the soul of Japanese monozukuri (the art of making things), using traditional Japanese blacksmithing techniques—working with fire and hammering the iron—to create a personal masterpiece.

A rare hands-on experience in an authentic forge

Step into a real blacksmith’s workshop filled with the roar of the furnace and the rhythmic ring of the hammer. Under expert guidance, you’ll transform a simple five-inch nail into your own unique paper knife. This activity is safe and welcoming for participants of all ages!

Schedule

  • Welcome & Safety Briefing

Please show the My Page reservation screen upon arrival. A staff member will first explain the forging process and provide essential safety guidelines to ensure even beginners feel comfortable before starting.

  • Heating the Metal

Watch the fire come to life as you heat a five-inch nail in the forge. Under the blacksmith's guidance, you'll wait for the metal to reach the perfect temperature for shaping.

  • The Forging Process

Pick up the hammer! You will strike the glowing metal, gradually flattening and shaping it into a sleek paper knife. The blacksmith will be right there to assist with the technique.

  • Finishing & Completion

After final adjustments and cooling, your creation is complete. Your handcrafted paper knife is yours to take home the very same day.
