Experience making plum wine and syrup, a classic part of Japan's summer traditions?

Making plum wine and syrup isn't just an activity—it's a journey that begins with preparation. Your plum wine and syrup will be nurtured and perfected by your own hands, offering a truly unique experience that connects you to Japan's traditional culture. While in Japan, you'll learn the art of crafting these beverages, and after your trip, the process of nurturing them continues. In the end, the plum wine and syrup you've created will become an unforgettable, personal creation.

Making plum wine and plum syrup is a traditional Japanese culinary practice known as Ume Shigoto

In addition to the four seasons, Japan has a fifth season called Tsuyu (the rainy season). Written in kanji as 梅雨 (plum rain), this period lasts from May to June, when plums ripen. During this time, many households make plum wine, plum syrup, and pickled plums, making it a cherished part of Japan's culinary and cultural traditions that reflects the changing seasons.

Buy umeboshi (pickled plums) made using traditional Japanese methods

You can purchase pickled plums from this long-established shop, in business since 1830. The top recommendation is pickled plums made with Hitachino Ume, a newly introduced plum variety available exclusively from the shop. Don’t miss the chance to try this traditional delicacy, a beloved part of Japanese cuisine for generations.
