Activity

Learn about Japan's craft culture in Shizuoka, where master craftsmanship lives on to this day

With a long history as a city of craftsmanship, Shizuoka is renowned for Suruga Maki-e lacquerware and is Japan's top producer of Hina doll accessories. This hands-on experience offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the dedication of local artisans and the refined techniques behind their intricate handiwork—traditions that continue to thrive in this area.

Design your own Hagoita paddle lucky charm to ward off evil

In Japan, the Hagoita has long been believed to repel negative energy and symbolize wishes for healthy growth. Create your own personal amulet by using this traditional paddle.

Craft a custom piece using Shizuoka's lucky motifs and kanji, carrying your own wishes

Choose a lucky motif associated with Shizuoka, such as Mt. Fuji or a daruma doll, and adorn your Hagoita using the artistry of the Oshi-e technique. Then, select a single kanji character that reflects your wish, such as happiness or good fortune, and hand-write it yourself with a brush to create a truly personalized piece.

Bring your craft to life with the traditional Maki-e lacquer technique, reflecting Japanese beauty and spirit

Suruga Maki-e, a traditional lacquer craft representing Shizuoka, is used to add the finishing touches to the kanji character written on the Hagoita. By sprinkling gold powder and colored pigments onto its surface, the piece transforms into a creation filled with personal meaning.

By learning these techniques directly from skilled artisans, you'll gain insight into the culture and passion behind their craftsmanship

Throughout this experience, you will receive hands-on instruction from artisans who have spent many years honing their skills. In addition to technical explanations, such as the secrets behind the beautiful finish, you will have the rare opportunity to deepen your understanding of the artisans' philosophy and the cultural background of Shizuoka's craft traditions. This is a truly special and invaluable time for direct interaction with these artisans.

Schedule

  • Arrival procedures

Show the reservation page from your My Page upon arrival. After completing the registration, you will be guided to the workshop area. While you wait, please feel free to explore the studio, where a variety of traditional crafts are on display.

  • Learn about the significance of Engi (auspiciousness) and the meaning behind each kanji character before choosing your own unique design

Artisans will explain the details of the experience, including the importance of auspicious Shizuoka-inspired motifs such as Mt. Fuji and daruma dolls, as well as personal wishes represented by each kanji. Take your time to reflect on your own wishes before making your final decision.

  • Write your chosen kanji character using the Maki-e lacquer technique (available in the Standard Plan and Premium Plan only)

Experience the traditional art of Maki-e. Under the artisan's instruction, you will brush your chosen kanji directly onto the Hagoita. By sprinkling gold powder and colored pigments over the surface, the character stands out clearly, breathing life into your work.

  • Use the artistry of craftsmanship to create three-dimensional Oshi-e parts!

Next, you will create the main motif. Following a design template, you will cut out the cardboard base, layer it with soft cotton, and experience the delicate process of Oshi-e by carefully wrapping it in vibrant fabrics. Once finished, you will decorate these 3D parts and attach them to your Hagoita.

  • Complete your one and only Hagoita through interaction with skilled artisans!

Your personal good-luck Hagoita is now complete. While your work dries, enjoy a conversation with the artisans to expand your knowledge of the techniques and cultural background behind their craftsmanship. You can take your finished craft home on the day as a priceless memory of your journey in Shizuoka.
