April 08, 2021
About 80 minutes away from Tokyo by Shinkansen. Hop onto a free shuttle bus in front of the station, and voila, you’ll find yourself at Hunter Mountain Shiobara. This is an extremely convenient ski resort, with large-scale gondolas and a 12-slope course - one of the largest-scale slopes in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Hunter Mountain Shiobara has excellent accessibility, weather, and snow quality. In this article, we’ll be going over the 5 spots we most recommend at this ski resort, having actually been there ourselves.

Broad Way, where even beginners can enjoy some dynamic skiing/snowboarding

Broad Way scenery
One unique element of Hunter Mountain Shiobara is that all of their courses are named after actual existing locations in New York.

The main course, Broad Way, is on an expansive slope that even beginners will be able to go down with ease.

It’s best to warm up on the slopes here first. There’s a high-speed four-person lift at the side of the course so you can go back up quickly, making this an efficient practice course.

Wall St., with its thrilling, steep slopes

Wall St. scenery
Wall St. is a thrilling course that starts at the summit, with steep slopes, and a maximum steepness of 25 degrees. It’s the most well-known steep slope in Hunter Mountain Shiobara.

Though the steepness can be quite scary at first, you’ll be fine as long as you’re about intermediate level, as the course is so wide.

This course is especially popular immediately after the snow is compacted, for its high-speed downhill runs. There’s also a ski lift running right next to it, so you’ll feel the people on the lifts watching you as you ski/snowboard confidently down the slope.

Top of Hunter, where you can look out over the mountains of the Tokyo metropolitan area

Gondola Summit Station building
This is the highest point of Hunter Mountain Shiobara, located right next to the Gondola Summit Station building! From here, you can get a panoramic view of the mountains in the distance - a breathtakingly beautiful sight.

There are many cold days during the season, so the trees around the area will often be covered in hoarfrost. The scenery is striking, with the contrast of the hoarfrost against the clear blue skies. But be careful, as the course that starts at the gondolas is oriented for intermediate-level skiers and above.

The Center House, with its woodsy warm atmosphere

People gathering at Center House
Center House, located at the base of the mountains, is a stylish spot equipped with a wooden-style boardwalk. On sunny days, you’ll definitely want to eat outside!

It’s fun to watch people skiing/snowboarding down the slopes in front of you, but it’s also fun to just buy and eat the desserts sold inside the Center House. It’s an amazingly comfortable place.

Baskin Robbins ice cream tastes even better at the ski resort

Baskin Robbins store inside the ski resort
There are many kinds of restaurants in the Center House. There’s all kinds of stuff to eat, from the staples - curry and Japanese set meals - to authentic kiln-roasted pizzas.

Of these, the one that stands out the most is Baskin Robbins. This is one of the very few Baskin Robbins located inside a ski resort. They offer a smaller range of flavors than the regular stores, and so mostly only the popular ones. Whether it’s as a snack or as a reward to yourself after a long day of skiing, eating ice cream at the ski resort is the best thing ever!

Get the most out of this slope in the Tokyo metropolitan area!
