Mt. Jeans Nasu - a ski resort you don’t have to ski in, full of fun snow activities!

December 01, 2021
Mt. Jeans Nasu has gathered attention, particularly amongst families with children and foreign tourists, as a ski resort you can have fun in without skiing. This ski resort offers a wide range of activities other than skiing and snowboarding, like fat bike tours - an activity in which you bike your way through the snow. There’s also a kids-only snow play area next to the beginner-oriented course. All around the ski resort you’ll see people enjoying themselves in their own ways, from the families making snowballs and having snowball fights to the skiers in the course over, putting their skis on with an experienced touch, and the skiers racing through the crisp clear air of the snowy mountain. In addition to beginner-oriented courses, there are also a number of courses that are great for more experienced skiers, with mogul courses only for advanced skiers as well.

Encounters with wild animals? Lots of fun snow activities

Snowshoeing tour
Many people might think ski resort = snowboarding + skiing, but in fact, they can offer a lot more. At Mt. Jeans Nasu, you can do a lot more than just ski down the courses - you can also enjoy a variety of winter activities.

Go on the snowshoeing tour, in which you walk through the serene mountains in snowshoes - the only thing you’ll be able to hear is your own breathing and the crunching sounds as you make your way through the snow. Or go on a fat bike tour, a new kind of cycling in which you ride through the snow-covered forest roads. There are all kinds of activities you can only experience at Mt. Jeans Nasu.

By the way, Mt. Jeans Nasu is the only place you can experience fat biking in the Kanto area. If you’re lucky, you might encounter wild animals like rabbits, tanuki, and foxes.

Kids Park - lots of fun for kids

Kids who aren’t yet old enough to ski on the slopes can still have a lot of fun in the Kids Park, which is located right near the base of the slopes. This Kids Park is divided into three areas - the Fuwafuwa Area, the Sled Area, and the Snow Escalator. Kids can go back and forth between the different areas and play as much as they want in the snow play area.

There are free rental sleds (with handles) as well, though there are only a limited number available. The park has a lively atmosphere, with the joyful sound of kids laughing as they slide around on the gentle slope of the course. Just watching your kids getting excited seeing and touching snow for the first time in their life, will make you so glad you were able to come here with them. It’s sure to be an amazing memory you and your family will never forget.

Nasu pork, a must-eat Tochigi specialty at Mt. Jeans Nasu

This is a region that is famous for its delicious Nasu pork, made from pigs that were raised stress-free in a gentle environment in Nasu-gun, Tochigi Prefecture, surrounded by nature. Nasu pigs are raised healthy in the great outdoors, and are known for their soft, fatty, juicy meat with a hint of sweetness. You can enjoy this Nasu pork in Joyful, a restaurant on the first floor of the base lodge.

Out of the many Nasu pork dishes, we particularly recommend the Nasu pork sauce cutlet rice bowl. The Nasu pork, cut into bite-sized portions, is incredibly tender and juicy. Take one bite and the umami flavor of the meat will flood your taste buds, and stir your appetite even further.

The combination of the sweet and spicy sauce on the Nasu pork and the white rice is amazing, and will keep you coming back for more. The restaurant also offers a lot of original dishes you can only get here, like the ginger-fried Nasu pork, which is fried on an extremely hot steel plate, as well as the roasted Nasu pork burger, which is a burger made with fresh vegetables and Nasu pork. A menu filled with Nasu pork! Make sure to try it out.
