December 28, 2022
Madarao Mountain Resort, in the prefectural boundary between Iiyama City in Nagano Prefecture and Myoko City in Niigata Prefecture, is a ski resort that prides itself on its courses laid out with excellent balance, so that anyone from beginners to advanced skiers can enjoy themselves. Alongside a wide array of activities, starting with the approximately 31 kinds of courses offering an abundance of variation, the resort is well-equipped with other activities besides skiing and snowboarding, such as the Kids’ Park and the snowmobile area. Let’s take a look at what makes Madarao Mountain Resort stand out.

Enjoy yourself to the fullest at this large-scale resort with great ease of access!

One of the appeals of Madarao Mountain Resort is the ease of access, with it taking less than 2 hours from Tokyo Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line.

There is a direct shuttle bus to the ski resort from the nearest station, Iiyama Station. So, you don’t have to worry about the trouble of walking around carrying cumbersome luggage during a season when the footing can be slippery.

In the area near this ski resort, there are quite a few facilities such as onsen ryokan and long-established restaurants where you can get a taste of the local cuisine. While you’re visiting Madarao Mountain Resort, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to enjoy some of the local cuisine that you can only get by going to a famous sightseeing location.

The incredible sight of the scenery you can take in from the summit of the course

One of the points recounted by many visitors to Madarao Mountain Resort is the wonder-inspiring beauty of the scenery. From the 1,382-meter-high summit, you can see at a glance Mt. Myoko, chosen as one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, and the snow-covered Mt. Kurohime.

On clear days with no clouds whatsoever, you can see Lake Nojiri, the second-largest lake in Nagano Prefecture, and the Northern Alps spreading out in the distance. Why not enjoy some cruising in this location with its stunning view?

By the way, at Lake Nojiri, there is also a wakasagi (pond smelt) fishing experience. You can have your freshly-caught wakasagi made into tempura and eat it at a restaurant out on the lake.

Also, the boat is fully equipped with heating and restrooms, so you can do your fishing while getting nice and warm. If you have a chance, definitely make sure to include this in your travel plan.

Nearby the Information Center which is right next to the No.1 Lift, the Kids’ Park is fully equipped with things like sledding and snow rafting to enjoy.

By the way, snow rafting is an activity where 2-4 people can ride along on the snowy slopes in a rubber raft towed behind a snowmobile. This is one snow activity that can only be enjoyed in winter! It’s very popular not just with kids, but with adults as well.

While riding, you become airborne at times going up and down hills, and when taking curves the boat shakes from left to right quite a bit, making this an activity sure to satisfy your need for an adrenaline rush.

Since in the raft you are closer to the ground than when on skis, you can get a thrill out of this ride that you can’t get from skiing, After getting your fill of skiing and snow play, be sure to try out snow rafting, too!

Varied courses that can be enjoyed by beginners, intermediate, and advanced skiers

Madarao Mountain Resort, which prides itself on its great word-of-mouth reputation, is full of a wide variety of courses to keep skiers from getting bored. There are a total of 31 types! The courses which are suited to various levels, beginner, intermediate, and advanced, have a well-balanced layout that is the specialty of this particular ski resort.

The course for beginners not yet used to skiing has a generous width, in addition to a gentle slope incline. So, beginners can ski here at their own pace without being self-conscious about being seen by other skiers or worrying about being an annoyance.

Once you’ve become used to skiing, how about trying out the long-distance intermediate/advanced course, which is a total of 2,500-meter in length? There’s nothing like the fresh, brisk feeling of skiing while having a cool wind on your entire body!

Also, the layout is such that a majority of the courses end up at the Information Center located in the middle of the ski resort. This is a great advantage, since even if your family go off onto different courses, there’s very little worry you’ll lose sight of each other.

At the hotel adjoining the slopes, Madarao Kogen Hotel, it’s possible to go into the baths even on a day trip

Onsen
Madarao Kogen Hotel, at the foot of the slopes of Madarao Mountain Resort, is complete with bathing facilities that you can enter on a day trip. In addition to relieving fatigue, the natural alkaline onsen water which gushes up from a depth of 600 meters also has beautifying effects, aids metabolism and smoothes the skin.

While it goes without saying that the onsen feels good, the scenery from the open air bath is also incredible! On clear nights the sky is completely full with twinkling stars, so beautiful that before you know it you forget the passage of time. Opening hours are from 6:00 am to 10:00 am and noon to 11:00 pm, so it’s possible to go into the onsen even until late at night.

After getting your fill of the nighttime skiing, which lasts until 9:00 pm, how about steeping yourself in the onsen to let your fatigue melt away? By the way, admission to the onsen is 900 yen for adults, 600 yen for children, and a face towel also comes together with admission.
