Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort - a family-friendly ski resort!

February 28, 2023
Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort is located in Yuzawa Town, Minamiuonuma-gun in Niigata Prefecture, and is a ski resort operated by K.K. smile ski resort. Since it’s connected directly to the nearest station, Echigo-Nakazato Station, there’s no need to waste any time or worry about how to get there. This accessibility makes it a popular resort for tourists both inside and outside of Japan. There are also all kinds of great spots in Echigo-Yuzawa Station, which is located near Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort, including the Ponshu-kan, where you can try over 90 different types of local Niigata sakes, a Japanese sake bath, and more. How about experiencing some of what Niigata Prefecture has to offer as you go about your ski trip?

Six ski slope areas and a wide variety of courses

ski slope
Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort offers a wide range of experiences, with six ski slope areas and over ten different courses. With beginner-oriented courses that allow you to enjoy long-distance runs that can be as long as 1,000 meters, and the advanced courses with their steep slopes and dramatic ups and downs, this is a ski resort for everybody - from beginners to intermediate and advanced skiers alike.

We also recommend the Forest Course, which will allow you to ski/snowboard through a forest. Because the courses are so wide, you also don’t have to worry about bumping into other skiers.

An area for both children and adults to play in the snow

Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort has play area for small children known as Nanchatte Snow Park. Nanchatte Snow Park is an area where children and families can play in the snow.

Nanchatte Snow Park is home to Nanchatte Mogul, which allows you to practice basic turn techniques using small little mogul slopes on the course, Nanchatte Athletics, which lets you ski/snowboard while going through tunnels and throwing snowballs, and other kinds of fun, casual slope-related activities.

Parents who wonder where they should let their kids play when they go to ski resorts, or those who are worried about bumping into more experienced skiers - worry no more. This ski resort will allow you and your children alike to get the most out of your ski trip.

Tired of playing? You can stop and relax at the Blue Train rest station located right next to the play area. The Blue Train is a former national railway train that is now used as a free rest station. It’s perfect for children that love trains.

Tarekatsu-don - a must-eat Niigata local specialty

smiling people
Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort is home to a variety of restaurants, including Paolino, with its piping hot pizzas, Yatai-mura Canteen, with its heartier meals, like beef rib kuppa (Korean rice soup) and Japanese BBQ curries, and Nakazawa Canteen, with their Japanese-centric offerings, like miso ramen and udon.

Though all these restaurants have amazing food, we recommend in particular WaraTako & Mt. Snack, located within the Mountain Terrace facility of the ski resort. Here, you can enjoy the local Niigata specialty, tarekatsu-don (sauce katsu rice bowl).

Typical katsu rice bowls consist of a thick katsu (fried cutlet) with an egg cooked onto it, and flavored with soy sauce, placed atop a bowl of rice. Tarekatsu-don, on the other hand, has much thinner katsu flavored with a sweet and salty, soy-sauce-based sauce, atop a bowl of rice.

The combination of the steaming hot rice - made in Niigata Prefecture - and the katsu, with its sweet-and-salty say sauce, is extraordinary. The katsu itself is crisp and crunchy on the outside and overflowing with juices from the meat on the inside. More and more umami flavor with every bite. This is a flavor you won’t forget once you’ve had it.

If you’ve come all the way to Niigata Prefecture, we recommend you stay at the Hotel Angel Grandia Echigo-Nakazato. There are free shuttle buses that go back and forth between this hotel and Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort, so you can head directly back to the hotel on the bus when you’re tired out.

Though its accessibility is certainly a perk, the greatest thing about the Hotel Angel Grandia Echigo-Nakazato is its vast large bath. It’s even open 24 hours, so you can head in and bathe whenever you want. They also have large baths with jacuzzi (with a massaging effect), as well as a roofed open air bath that lets you look out over the snowy landscape. Relax and bathe in the warm water, and all your day’s aches and pains will melt away.

Breakfast and dinner are provided in the form of a buffet, with both Japanese-, Western-, and Chinese-style food. Children and adults alike can eat whatever they want, however much they want. Why not try some delicious dishes made with freshly-caught seafood and fresh vegetables from Niigata Prefecture?

After skiing your heart out at Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort, we recommend you stop by Echigo-Yuzawa Station for some Niigata sightseeing. At Ponshu-kan, located inside of Echigo-Yuzawa Station, you can pay 500 yen to sample some of the local Niigata sake. They offer more than 150 different types of sake!

The store also provides a service known as “okan,” in which they heat up cold sake to suit your preferences, as well as salt to pair with your sake. Inside Ponshu-kan is also a bath that uses Japanese sake, known as Sakeburo Yunosawa.

We recommend the Jozen Mizu no Gotoshi for those who aren’t very strong with alcohol, but who want to try out the sake in Niigata. It has a low alcohol content, and is known for its light, refreshing flavor.

Another sake that’s popular at Ponshu-kan is Echigo Tsurukame - be sure to try that one out as well. You’ll be hit with the rich aroma of rice as soon as you put it to your mouth, and it goes down so easy you’ll find yourself going back for more.

At Sakeburo Yunosawa, you’ll be able to bathe in water that makes liberal use of the sake of Niigata Prefecture. Go into the water, and you’ll feel the faint, comforting aroma of Japanese sake.

Japanese sake is thought to help improve your circulation, helping relieve fatigue, stiff shoulders, and edema, and even helping moisturize your skin. Your skin after bathing in this Japanese sake bath will be smooth, plump, and moisturized - no wonder it’s loved by women from both inside and outside of Japan.

This is a sightseeing plan chock full of Japanese sake. Why not end your ski trip by drinking and then bathing in some Niigata Japanese sake?
