There are a total of 22 ski resorts packed into the Aizu area. Located in the center, Aizuwakamatsu Station is a famous tourist location with a deep history. Due to its inland location, Aizuwakamatsu experiences hot summers and cold winters. Since there’s such a radical difference in the hot and cold seasons, this has become a region that is a treasure trove of delicious meals. I went out to Aizuwakamatsu myself, so I’d like to introduce you to 5 gourmet locations I found within walking distance of Aizuwakamatsu Station!

Enjoy a traditional taste - Kitakata Ramen Marutaka Shokudo

Kitakata ramen, one of the three major ramen styles of Japan, originated here in the Aizu region. The main characteristic of Kitakata ramen is the noodle's thick texture and softness! The soup base is soy sauce-flavored clear tonkotsu (pork bone), which makes for its characteristic light flavor.

You can casually grab a bowl of Kitakata ramen at Kitakata Ramen Marutaka Shokudo. It’s right next to Aizuwakamatsu Station, so you can casually drop by while exploring the area.

The Aizu area flourishes as a mountain salt production region. Mountain salt is salt made from boiling down onsen water.

At Ramen Shop Taiichi, you can enjoy ramen made using mountain salt, for a unique and mellow flavor.

The translucent soup features the gentle flavoring of mountain salt and a slightly sweet aftertaste, making for an exquisite dish! Ramen Shop Taiichi closes as soon as they run out of soup, so if you’d like to enjoy a bowl, be sure to get there early!

You can enjoy various dishes that use Aizu miso at Mitsutaya. Miso Dengaku, a famous local delicacy, can be eaten around the Aizu area. In this cozy shop the feel and the atmosphere of the interior lets you get up close to the history of Aizu.

Kura no Mise, a famous shop for horse meat sashimi

The Aizu region has been well known for horse meat since long ago. It’s quite easy to get horse meat in this area, which was ranked no. 2 nationally for its production amount. Horse meat is comparatively more nutritious than beef or pork, and is generally eaten as sashimi.

In addition to the staple horse meat sashimi, you can also enjoy lightly cooked horse meat, and horse meat sushi.
